I think the other witness to the marriage of Hugh and Mary might be a Florence H McPhail. The top of the P is up in the first part of the minister's signature and the top of the l in the first g of same. There is a period at the end of her signature.

Witness Edith is possibly the wife of the minister and Florence perhaps a friend of Edith or someone from the church? Hugh and Mary likely didn't know anyone in Montreal....he probably just met her at the boat, they stayed in Montreal a few days, and then were married before travelling to Alberta.

PB

Added: I think with Mary's mother being a Russell and Mary as Mary Russell Paton on the marriage record is quite a good clue also. Does her birth cert match?

Hi Sandra and thanks so much for all your efforts.
You have pretty much followed my own steps in researching these families and drawn the same conclusions. The pieces all seem to fit but what a shame that unlike Scottish records there was not the same tendency in Canada to use the maiden name more often.  ::) Mention of 'nee Paton' on Hugh's obituary would have sealed the deal! However, I like that you and I are on the same page with our research and it makes for a very interesting story. I figure with Mary being a clerkess and Hugh being  a clerk for C.P.R. that perhaps these two met in Scotland via their respective jobs and agreed to marry. They must have been at least 4 years separated before Hugh had the funds to send for Mary and to marry just 3 days after arriving in a new country after all that time apart is a definite leap of faith.
Thanks again for your help.
Sage.
