Lilian Elizabeth Melita Bell
« on: Wednesday 10 March 21 12:22 GMT (UK) »
I have a newspaper report of Lilian Elizabeth Melita Bell marrying Mr Diaper in 1951.  She dies as Lilian Elizabeth Melita Diaper in 2002 in Winchester, born 17/08/1929.
Her parents are named in the newspaper report as Mr & Mrs James Bell.

Lilian G B Draper marries Mr Luke in 1919, then, after his death, marries James W C Bell in 1923.
They appear to have 4 sons from freebmd, one born Southampton, James in 1924, one born in Alverstoke, Reginald in 1926. Then 2 more sons born Southampton (1934 and 1937).
On the 1939 the father is away, Lilian G B Bell(1897) with James and Reginald showing,  then 3 redacted entries., then Harry Draper, father-in-law.

On the newspaper report she is referred to as the Bell's only daughter, so she is probably hiding under the thick black line with the 2 presumed living brothers.

Can anyone find a birth for her, please?

She is on a family tree on Ancestry with correct parents., it's  the Bell line.

Lillian Bell1929–2002

BIRTH 17 AUG 1929 DEATH 2002

Lilian Draper was born on 17 February 1897. She had four children with James William Charles Bell. She died in June 1972 at the age of 75.

When James William Charles Bell was born in 1897, his father, James, was 31 and his mother, Elizabeth, was 22. He had four children with Lilian Draper. He died in 1952 at the age of 55.

Only 4 children,  Reginald and Lilian are named, 2 others are private.

Yes, as far as I have looked for her, she is the correct daughter.  My problem is that I cannot see a birth  under that name with those parents.  I did not think it very likely that she would have been born abroad, so wondered if she had been adopted from somewhere.  Melita is a very distinctive name.

Well, at least I have not missed something very obvious.

Just been looking over those trees again, one suggests she was born in Malta.  Wonder if that is worth checking out.

I was going to ask what was James' occupation, particularly since he was abroad in 1939.

Melita is a name associated with Malta so the suggestion that she was born there is a good one.  Was James a navy man?

So where was he around 1929 when Lilian was born - perhaps the family were abroad?

The newspaper article does not state his profession, but does refer to him as BEM.  I agree that the name goes with Malta, but as I had just been looking for someone with the middle name of Passchendaele (which was not recorded when they married nor died) ,I did not know which came first - an actual birth in Malta or a desperate link without any visible records.
The other children were born in Hampshire, but that does not preclude some travel abroad, I suppose.

Think I will contact that person to see where the information comes from.
