Ancestry subscriptions
« on: Wednesday 10 March 21 15:34 GMT (UK) »
Hi All…, I have a quick question concerning their subscriptions.
I’ve been a member for well over 10 years.  However, I no longer agree with their subscription policies.  Like everyone else, (I suppose) I provide them with my private bank account details and they retrieve, automatically, each year, the sum due.

In this world of hackers where even Microsoft can get hacked, I no longer have the same confidence with them as I had a few years back.  Also, if by any unfortunate chance I die on the day of a payment, I will bet my last heavenly dollar that Ancestry would never reimburse the fee to my family. (even if they knew I was dead)

Question:  Do they have a system where I can pay them in the same way I pay my insurances, electricity or mortgage ?

Thanks…, Iain.

PS  This also goes for the British Newspaper Archive.

They don't have my bank account details, they only have the details of a credit card that I only use online.

Are you aware that you can get a cheaper subscription by not letting them automatically renew it.

Thanks Rosie...

No..., I didn't know.  How does it work ?

Concerning your credit card..., if, (for example) the annual fee increases, you only know about it when you eventually read your bank statement.  And this is what I mean.  If a hacker gets into their system, they could charge £1000 for an annual fee while transferring the money to their account.   ???

Its best to cancel your ancestry subscription and not have it automatically renewed.

This is the link you need to renew at discounted prices. 12 month offer.

https://www.ancestry.co.uk/cs/offers/subscribe?dna=crossAct

A tip IF you use an i pad to re-subscribe using this link, you may have to refresh the screen a couple of times for the 12 month offer to appear.

Thank you Sandra.  In fact, my suscription fell by the wayside a few months ago.  As I/we receive promotions, I was waiting for one of them to be amailed.
I will certainly use you URL.

Thank you to you both..., Iain.

Credit card Fraud is generally covered by Consumer credit act.   My credit card providers now also provide additional security by sending a text to me with a number to use to authorise a payment before it goes through.

In the meantime, this morning I received my first proposition.

I certainly have no problem with that credit card provider, they have been known to phone if they doubted anything and have stopped me from buying something from Amazon that was dodgy
