Amended Birth Certificate
« on: Thursday 11 March 21 01:19 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

Does anyone know whether the evidence required to amend a birth certificate is available to view?

The original certificate was issued in 1945 with the amended certificate being issued in 1947.

I have both certificates but no details of what was submitted to get the certificate amended.

I once had one of those and the answer was “no”.

It was amended when the person in question was 16 years old and removed all reference to the father. I suspect some form of statement was sworn before a solicitor or magistrate.

Is it a correction of the 1945 entry (with a new certificate issued in 1947), or a re-registration made in 1947 ?

The evidence required would differ depending on the nature of the change made.

Yes without mentioning any names can you say what the difference is between the two?
Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos
Pick - Frocester Glos

The birth was re-registered in 1947. The original certificate did not name the Father. The subsequent certificate named the father and amended the surname to the fathers as the Mother and Father had married in the intervening period.

Sounds like a simple re-registration under the Legitimacy Act - to legitimise the child.

The only evidence would be for the man to confirm he was the father, and confirmation that they had married since the birth.

( at that time, for the re-registration to be allowed, they would also had to have been free to marry at the time of the birth, i.e. not married to anyone else)

The Father may have been a WW2 serviceman who was away when the child was born and couldn't be present at the registration.
