Railway - apprentice boilermaker
« on: Thursday 11 March 21 15:45 GMT (UK) »
Wondering if anyone has access to railway records and can find me more information on this guy who pops up living with my relatives in 1911 Census.

Name: James Holmes
Age: 16
Relation to Head: Relative
Marital Status: Single
Born: Lanarkshire Glasgow
Address: 9 Craigton Ter, Springburn, Glasgow

Occupation: apprentice boilermaker
Industry: WB railway worker

I’d be interested to find out more about him and particularly how we are related.

Can anyone tell me who WB Railway are?

Perhaps:

William Beardmore and Company

They made railway locomotives

Added: Locomotive manufacture started in the 1920s, so maybe not the correct employer

I wonder if it’s mistranscribed and should be NB, for North British railway worker.

They had a large locomotive works in Springburn.

Thanks for that I've never heard of William Beardmore, thought I was reading the census wrong.

I would say that is NB railway works or worker, not sure which abbreviation,  but below is an stoker, just NB railway no works or worker distinction.

I would expect to find an apprentice boilermaker in a loco works, a separate division of the railway
Making locos rather than running them.

Now agree it is more likely to be NB Railway Wks

The 'W' in Wks is written different to the 'N' in NB

I think you may be right, Mazi makes a good argument and if there is a North British works in Springburn where they live. It makes sense to work there rather than travel.
