Where is Boherpedalane?
« on: Friday 12 March 21 03:38 GMT (UK) »
Various documents from the late 1700s give the residence of my Kirbys as Boherpedalane and Boherdellane but I can't find them on any map or list of townlands. Other documents around this date place them at Glenogra and Bohergeela which I have found. Can anyone suggest what they might be?

England:
Durham: COULSON, FENWICK, HUNTER, LOWES, NAYLOR, ROBSON
Norfolk: DEWING, OUGHTON, TAYLOR,
Lancashire: TWEDDLE
Ireland: KEATING, KIRBY, Limerick; NELSON, Donegal
Scotland: BENNIE, Glasgow; COOK, Renfrewshire; HENDERSON, Alloa/Dundee; HUNTER, Glasgow; KIRKWOOD, Alloa; LAMONT, Dalkeith; YOUNG, Glasgow
Switzerland: VOSTI, DELUBINI

- Boherpedalane - did not match any documents.

Suggestions:

Make sure all words are spelled correctly.
Try different keywords.
Try more general keywords.

This is the first time this has happened to me in many years of searching the Internet. .

Is there any chance that these names have been transcribed incorrectly or have you viewed the originals?

If your Kirbys travelled and had to rely on officials to complete forms then a person with an Irish accent speaking to an official of UK or USA could throw up all sorts of renderings.

The other thought is that this is a property name eg The Pines Chelsea London.

Thank you both for the feedback. I don't have the original documents but transcripts - attached. The first is for Patrick Kirby who witnessed a Marriage Settlement in 1773. The second is from Betham Genealogical Abstracts (made in the 19th century) in relation to the will for Patrick Kirby (1776) and probate (1782) granted to his brother Maurice Kirby.

Some townland names fell into disuse over the years (making them hard to find obviously) and though most Irish deeds used townlands I have also seen parts of townlands used, where a local name existed.  Occasionally these can be found on the Griffiths maps (if you know roughly which townlands to search).

Boher is a common enough Irish word (just meaning road).

Thanks, Kay, that's really helpful.  Elwyn, thanks for the tip about the Griffiths maps - now I can narrow down the area to Ballingarry, it should make it easier. I did try a search in the Irish newspapers but nothing came up.

Thanks Maggsie, they're very close to each other aren't they? But quite a way from Ballingarry. I'm beginning to suspect that I'm looking at two different Kirby families
