Catherine McInnes (b. 1834, Ireland)
« on: Friday 12 March 21 12:00 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I am trying to find information for a Catherine McInnes (born c. 1834, Ireland).  Her parents were John McInnes (b. 1799 Scotland) and Elizabeth Rebecca Marshall (b. 1811 Southwark, London but died in 1845) - although I am not sure if Elizabeth was her mother??

I can only find Catherine in the 1841 census in a Barracks in Middlesex with her parents and three brothers - so for some reason she was the only one born in Ireland, her brothers were Middlesex.  When I said I am not sure if Elizabeth was her mother this is because, her father was 33 when he married Elizabeth who was 19 - so I was thinking that perhaps he was married before??  I have tried General Records Office but they have nothing for all four children.  I have tried the Irish records office and again nothing.  There are two Catherine's in 1851 - same name, same birth year (give or take a year), same birth place - but she obviously can't be in two places (one in the Isle of Man and the other in Renfrewshire).

I am sure I am missing something so any pointers as to where to look next, would be great.

The 2nd Battalion Scots Fusiliers were in Ireland during at least part of 1834, which likely explains Catherine having been born there.

In the timescale, it was quite usual for women and children to live with or near their husbands/fathers regiments, even travelling with them.

You say Elizabeth was 19 when she married and born c1811, so was marriage in 1830? If yes, then obviously she could be mother of Catherine born c1834. This does not mean to say that John may or may not have also had a previous marriage.

ps. Not seeing John and the three sons you have mentioned, in the  Barracks at 1841. Do they appear on a different page to Catherine and her mum (who is only recorded as Mrs Chalmers)? What were their names/ages?

Is this the death for Elizabeth McInnes
Age 35 years
Burial 2 December 1845
Essex England Chipping Ongar

Are you sure that is the correct census record you have in 1841 ?
Have you looked at this census record 1841
Civil Parish Chipping Ongar Essex
John Macinnes ( McInnes ) age 42 born Scotland about 1799
Elizabeth McInnes age 30 born about 1811 Essex
John McInnes age 3 born about 1838
Donald McInnes age 1 born about 1840

Do you have the marriage for Elizabeth Chalmers and John McInnes

There is a marriage for a Elizabeth Chalmers 4 March 1831
St Mary Le Strand Westminster London
Spouse John McInnes

Baptisms for
Daniel McInnes birth year 14/4/1840 mothers maiden name Chalmers
Henry Archibald McInnes 27 /4/1842 mothers maiden name Chalmers
Both baptised 3/4/1844 Chipping Ongar Essex
Mother Elizabeth Rebecca

Is this your family ?

Certainly, the John that rosie17 has posted, then appears in 1851 and 1861, with new wife and additional children, so this would fit with his wife having died before 1851.

I do think issyb2010, that you need to re-visit your research and re-check the details you have, as things aren't quite tying together, especially the 1841 census at the barracks.

I couldn't see a John McInnes on the 1841 census at the barracks just a Mrs McInnes and her family

Yes, that's all I found too, hence me suggesting issyb2010 re-visit and re-check their research.
