Lace Factories in Sneinton - 1 Thoresby Street
« on: Friday 12 March 21 14:53 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to find out who owned and which architect built a lace factory in Sneinton - it is called One Thoresby Street now, it used to be building E28 of the Boots Island Site and before that a lace factory - it's address was probably Manvers Street. It is on Pennyfoot street, Evelyn Street and Manvers Street.

I am not sure how to find out any history about lace and this building.

Any help would be amazing

Many thanks
Kathryn

Lace making around Nottingham grew out of the stocking knitting trade. In 1799 there were six lace makers in Nottingham; by 1832 there were 186.

History https://www.visit-nottinghamshire.co.uk/ideas-and-inspiration/history-and-heritage/nottingham-lace-history

..... and if you check the directories in the years you are interested in you are likely to find which manufacturer had a factory on or around those particular streets and then can look for the history of that particular one if it was on the Boots site it is likely to be Island st but could be Manvers Street.

Look a quarter way down the page 'Thomas Elliott' http://www.beeston-notts.co.uk/industry_lace.shtml

Also if you can find the book "The Lacemakers of Calais by Gillian Kelly" Elliotts connection as it was Elliott lace makers from Nottingham who went to France to set up

Sorry - Beeston to Sneinton is 6 miles - not a great distance, is it?

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

That was taken from Boots history and kathryn said "Boots island site"
