Construction Corps
« on: Friday 12 March 21 21:50 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for some information about the Construction Corps which existed in Ireland during WW11. This Corps was part of the Irish Army ( I understand it was something like the Home Guard).
There were some units based in Waterford and Tramore. I would like to find out if any records of the members still exist and if so would they be held by the Military Archives.

Hope someone can help
Thank you

My Father was in the Construction Corps 1943 - 1945 and I have his service and release papers.  Released in Tramore.  I have been searching or photos of his unit for a while now - but there is alot of general history online ...be nice to get something specific.

I did post in a Tramore FaceBook page the following a while ago :

"Hi - following up from a 2016 post from  Keith Dickinson re "My Mum often spoke of the Army Engineers being sent to Tramore to drain what is now Down Around and where the Boating lake is, etc.."
A long shot - would there be any photo's of the Construction Corps work here - I have seen one dtd 1940 (too early).
My father was in the Corps ('No 5 Works Company.' possibly units) and it was suggested I ask.  He joined up at 16, said he was 17, Discharged after his 2 years (12 Feb 1943 - 11 Feb 1945) at Tramore, Waterford.  I received his Irish Army records - and already had his discharge papers."

Hi Rob
Thank you for your reply. I contacted the Military Archives and they are sending on the service records that I was looking for. I am not sure if there are any photos of the Construction Corps but I will certainly have a look at some old family photos and also the newspapers of the time to see if I can locate any. If I find anything I will contact you again.

Thank you again for your reply

Hi Rob Cullen,

Came across this photo of 5th Battalion of Construction Corps in Tramore. Thought you might like it.

Just to point out that there was no WWII in Ireland. There was "the Emergency".
