Quarter Master Sergeant of the R.L.M.
« on: Sunday 14 March 21 14:22 GMT (UK) »
I have just discovered that my ancestor William LEWIS is mentioned on a tombstone in St.James Cemetery, Liverpool.

It reads
The burial place of William LEWIS, Quarter Master Sergeant of the R.L.M. There is no date quoted but it comes just below and immediately after the death of another ancestor who died 18/1/1838.

I have lots of things  to unravel on this tombstone  but can anyone tell me what  the R.L.M. stood for and where they were based.
Many thanks

Royal Lancashire Militia.
Which Battalion he belonged to would be subject to where he lived.
There were 2 based in Liverpool the 2nd. & 4th.
There were 7 Battalions in total which were disembodied &
re-embodied at various times.
In 1816 the entire Militia was disembodied with the 1st. - 4th. Battalions being
re-embodied 1n 1854.
So one might assume your man died after 1854.

Could this be him?

24 April 1841 - Manchester Courier and Lancashire General Advertiser
On the 19th at his residence, Bittern Street, Liverpool, in the 83rd year of his age, Mr William Lewis, late quarter-master sergeant in the Secord Royal Lancashire Militia

Before that, in the Liverpool Mercury 10 Jan 1834
Same day (Thursday 2nd), deeply & deservedly regretted, Betty, the wife of Mr William Lewis, quarter-master sergeant in the Royal Lancashire Militia, Harford(?) Street, at the advanced age of 75 years. She had been married 55 years, and was the grandmother to 27 children (or could be 37), 20 of whom are living.

Thank you all so much for your very valuable input. You have in effect done my research for me and I cannot thank you all enough.
This is absolute gold dust for me and all I need to do now is contact the Lancashire Records Office to see what they might have for Williams service in the RLM.
