Looking for Martha FARRER/FARRAR pre 1882
« on: Monday 15 March 21 02:42 GMT (UK) »
I have the 1882 marriage cert of my Great Grandparents Martha FARRER & William Edward HOARE, at the Baptist Chapel in the district of Luton.

Martha's address is given as 114 Chapel St, Luton, her age 20 and her father Frederick Farrer, Gardener.
I can't seem to find her, or her father, in the 1881 census, or before that.

I don't know who her mother is or whether she has siblings.

Is there a way to find who was at that Chapel Street address in the 1881 Census?
Any other ways I can find more about where she was or her family?

Martha and William Hoare came to Australia sometime before their daughter Greta was born in 1889. I don't know by which ship or when they arrived.

A now-deceased family member told me they had an infant who died on the way, and another son who died shortly after they arrived.
Their youngest son, Reginald b. 1892, then died in 1921, after the war. Greta was the only one to survive and have offspring.

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Possible baptism at St Mary the Virgin Harefield on 23 Feb 1862 (born 26 Dec 1861). Parents Frederick (gardener) and Edith.

Martha (9) and brother John (15, gardener) are with sister Matilda (25) and her husband Frederick LAWRENCE (23, hat blocker) at Wood St, Luton in 1871. RG10/1569 pg34 and 35.

Based on the children's names, they appear to have mother's maiden name FITZJOHN. Frederick FARRER (servant) married Edith FITZJOHN 10 Oct 1844 at St Marylebone (both sign). His father: John FARRER (labourer) and hers: Benjamin FITZJOHN (labourer). Witnesses: Timothy MARTIN and Elizabeth FITZGERALD.

Birth

HOARE, BEATRICE  JUSTINIA
Mother's maiden surname: FARRER
GRO Reference: 1883  M Quarter in LUTON  Volume 03B  Page 449

William, Martha and Beatrice arrived into NSW in 1883 on the North.

According to this, Martha was native to Middlesex.

Beatrice died in 1884 and a son Conrad was born in 1885 and died in 1886.

Greta was registered as 'Greeta' in 1889.

I can't easily find Martha in 1881. She's not at 114 Chapel St - a John and Sarah DONHON are there.

Wow, this is all great information! Thank you everyone!

Yes, that sounds right about the children who died - I didn't know Beatrice's name. I did supsect Conrad was the infant son who died, and I remember my older family members pronouncing Greta as 'Greeta'.

I did have from somewhere that Martha (she was known by the family as 'Maimie') was from Middlesex but couldn't find from where that info had come.

So it would seem that Martha's the youngest born not long after poor Agnes.

Thanks again for all the information.
