WW2 UK Service Record
« on: Monday 15 March 21 03:44 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to locate a service record for a J Beattie he was a Private - service number 14698916 Archive Reference number: WO417/87 British Army - Highfield Light Infantry and was wounded. I did find a record in the Forces of War database however I need to confirm the first name is John and would also like to find a date of birth or address to confirm he is my relative. I know Find my Past has war records but I do not want to purchase a subscription for a single record - they only offer yearly subscriptions. Can anyone help me on this?

Thank you for your consideration.

Highfield Light Infantry - should this be Highland Light Infantry?

WW2 Service Records are only available from the MOD:

As tonepad has linked, service records for all personnel serving after 1920 are still with the MOD.

You'll need a Death Certificate, a Date of Birth OR a Service Number, and a fee of £30. For Army records, there is a long delay of at least 9 months to a year at the moment.

He featured on a casualty list as a private in the Highland Light  Infantry wounded in Western Europe on 4 November 1944.  This was later corrected - his unit was in fact 1/4 Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry (KOYLI).

These casualty lists are probably the only records for this J Beattie held by FindMyPast or Forces War Records.
