Signature comparison - same person?
« on: Monday 15 March 21 14:21 GMT (UK) »
My ancestor Ann Pinder was married to John Hewitt on 19th July 1812 at St Editha's in Tamworth. She signed her name in the register and was the only one to do so (the groom and witnesses signed with an "X").

On 30th November 1812 (so four months after Ann and John were married), a lady named Ann Pinder signed as a witness for the marriage of Thomas Storer and Elizabeth Smith.

At first, I wasn't sure if it was 'my' Ann because I would assume she would have used her married name by that point!? But I think the signatures are very similar. She is the only Pinder in the parish registers of Tamworth so  don't think she was a local girl. Is this the same person do you think?

I'd say its the same signature.

(and I have a previous example of a married woman signing something with her maiden name. I once did that on a cheque, 20 years after I'd been married! It wasn't until I was about to put it in the envelope to post that I realised. Lord alone knows where my head was that day!)

The signature looks pretty much the same, so I would agree with the previous poster.

Thank you both. If she had only been married for four months then I suppose she was still getting used to the idea  ;D

Also, how much other writing could she do,  she may have learned to write her name as Pinder, and not yet learned how to write it as Hewitt.  (Although I do think it looks quite a confident signature.)
