WW1 Soldier Great Grandfather John McNicol

Hi, I was wondering if anyone could colourise these two photographs of my Great Grandfather John McNicol in his war uniform in the hope of being to identify his battalion/regiment.

He's a junior officer - a lieutenant - in a Scottish regiment. There are a few possibilities..I will come back later today with some suggestions.

Was he plain John McNicol ? Any middle names?

Yes, his birth certificate states just ‘John McNicol’.

He could be Second Lieutenant John McNicol of the Royal Scots Fusiliers. Formerly a Private (33327)  in the same regiment, commissioned 28 May 1918.
