Ellen Rule
« on: Monday 15 March 21 17:13 GMT (UK) »
In 1891 Ellen Rule was living with her husband John and three children in Balsham Cambs.
Ellen's birth details were recorded as 1863 West Wratting.
In 1901 the family is still in Balsham, with six children.
GRO states, first child Joseph mmn Marsh, the next two, Ida & Herbert mmn Salmon, last three mmn Marsh. They had two more children, Violet & Sidney mmn Marsh.

In 1883 John Rule married Ellen Elizabeth Marsh 3b 1159.

Can anyone see Ellen's parents and who can explain Ida & Herbert?

Perhaps I need to clarify.
Ellen Elizabeth born as Marsh. Probably known as Salmon after her mother's marriage when she was aged 1. Became confused when her (Ellen's) children were registered.

Interesting .... and well found
so,.... Ellen was born Marsh to Abigail, her mother married Salmom and Ellen adopted his name until she married John Rule as Marsh.
I found Ellen Salmon in '71 with Abigal and Abraham in West Wratting.

Which Salmon is the mother of Ida and Herbert, living with John and Ellen ?

There's no reason why it isn't Ellen. You would actually need the birth cert to be absolutely sure.

I had the same situation when doing a friend's family tree. The mother of several children was married - but a couple of the children had a different maiden name on the GRO Index - just like your case.

The mother had been illegitimate - but then HER mother married. I did obtain birth certs for the children who had differing mother's maiden names. The correct maiden name (ie the illegitimate name) - that birth was registered by the mother. The wrong maiden name - ie the mother's mother's married name - had been registered by the father!

The father had known the family under his bride's mother's married name.

(I hope you can understand that -- I know what I mean, but it sounds garbled!)
Places of interest;
Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Southern Ireland, Scotland.
