1. the letter of Catherine Blundell. An alternate to the mark of when the person doesn't sign.

2. the letter of Edward Guy

It's probably Fazakerley, a common name in Lancashire at this time. I don't understand about the letter, what circumstances would this happen?  Thank you.

When someone could not write, they would make a mark instead, or in this case “the letter”.

  But it was the letter of Edward Guy, who is he in all this, I'm confused  ???

Thank you all, I was confused by the term letter rather than mark.
