Looka like there were 6 boys - I will write their names as they were registered - ie - James was registered as Jimmy
Tom 1st born -
Walter
Jimmy
John
Frederick
Albert
............
Tom born in Swindon - the other 5 in Dover - the boys were born over a 12 year period

Might sound morbid - but the first 3 born of those  sons may have served in WW2....to make sure none died in the war - check them all out on https://www.cwgc.org/ ...and when the details come up - look for Son of Thomas and Maria ...  hopefully you won't find any ....good luck

Thanks for that is there any info on who Tom’s parent were? Have no idea who the mother is but have the marriage certificate for Tom and Maria saying that Tom’s father was walter matthews occupation horse dealer would love to find out more about his dad and especially his mother but just keep hitting a brick wall

Maria seems to be hard to find on the 1911 census record.  I can't find any birth record for her around 1901.

I can find a Maria born in 1895

However the 1901 census shows this Maria's father to be George, Foreman in bakehouse.

Who were the witnesses on the marriage certificate and what occupation is given for her father James?  What address is given for James and Maria?

well this is a bit of a turn up
my sister in law is a Whitington and her dad was born Brighton 1926 - George Ransley married Elizabeth Whitington 1887 in Brighton - ...possible connection to my sister in laws family - doesn't look like your Maria - but if it is ,let me know - I will delve further in to Elizabeth Whitingtons line - cheers

Thanks everyone but I have managed to trace Maria’s family back to 1700,s her father was John ransley and mother was patience hughes/ransley and even further back the famous smugglers the aldignton gang George ransley head of, born in ruckinge very interesting that was, but my main concentration is trying to find my matthews side but just keep hitting a brick wall, it has been said that my great grandfather had a showman’s guild card so could be some connection to fairground
