The de la Warr connection is a bit odd, surely more to it than just liking the name.

Not only did she give the name to Jack but retrospectively to Frank.

Have you investigated the Boxall connection?.

Charles Boxall says his birthplace is Norfolk and Mary Wade Hutton is from Yorkshire, so no obvious connection there.

Not that this helps as to why Mary gave her sons Jack & Frank the De Le Warr name  :-\

Charles Cyril Boxall bn c1871 Norwich has name Charles Cyril De-La-Warr Boxall on London Electoral Register years 1919-29 living at 241 New Kings Road with Jessie Boxall

Charles Cyril De La Warr Boxall died 12 May 1946, probate 1947, widow Frances Annie Boxall,Frances Annie Boxall appears to have died 10 Jul 1963, probate 20 Nov 1963

Did Charles BOXALL leave his wife Frances Annie after 1901 census  RG13; Piece: 440; Folio: 9; Page: 10 as he appears to be with ‘wife’ Jessie in 1911 and Frances Annie Boxall is with her 2 daughters.

Charles Cyril D Boxall Mar 1898 marriage  Francis Annie WILLIAMS, baptism of their two daughters (their mmn Williams on GRO indexes)

Cecile Dorothy Boxall Birth 4 Feb 1900
Baptism 25 Mar 1900 St Michael, Chester Square, London, Westminster
Father: Charles Cyril De La Warr Boxall, occ hairdresser Mother: Frances Annie, abode 24 Anhalt Rd, Battersea

Winifred Catherine Boxall Birth 3 Nov 1901
Baptism 5 Jan 1902 St Michael, Chester Square, London, Westminster
Father: Charles Cyril Boxall, occ hairdresser Mother: Frances Annie
abode 25 Warfield Street, Battersea Park S.W.

Whether this is a coincidence I don't know but it seems Charles Cyril De Le Warr Boxall appears to have had a brother named Frank

Charles Cyril Boxall born Norwich age 20, hairdresser
Frank age 16
parents
Charles BOXALL 40 , house painter & Ellen 38 on 1891 census living Westbourne Street  RG12; Piece: 72; Folio: 179; Page: 17 on 1881 census it’s just Ellen Boxall and the 2 boys, plus a lodger, but Charles BOXALL Jnr. appears to have the middle initial 'S'  RG11; Piece: 109; Folio: 30; Page: 54 - see attachment, as does his father on 1901 census

Possible birth entry for Frank Boxall shown born Pimlico (1891c) Holbron (1881c)
not found one for Charles Cyril Boxall to confirm IF mmn Drake  ???

Frank BOXALL mmn   DRAKE
1875  M Quarter in HOLBORN  Volume 01B  Page 686

It looks as if Frank hasn’t used the name De Le Warr he married as
Cyril Frank Boxall 22, occ Painter on 6 Jun 1897 his father Charles, occ Decorator

His Army record

Frank Boxall age 40
Marriage 6 Jun 1897 Pimlico London
Document Year:   1915
Residence Place:   1 Chiddingstone L, Fulham
Regimental Number:   10850
Regiment Name:   Army Cyclist Corps

Cordelia Maud Reeves   Spouse
Ellen Maud Lily Boxall   Child 21 Oct 1897
Edith Florence Boxall   Child 11 Aug 1899
Cyrel Frank Boxall   Child 10 Nov 1915

I could not find an Ellen Drake/Charles Boxall marriage on FreeBMD  ???

Found this marriage entry for an Ellen DRAKE to a Charles BUT this Charles' occupation does not match that of the Charles Boxall on 1891 census with his wife Ellen and sons Charles & Frank  ???

FreeBMD
Sep 1868 Wandsworth
Ellen DRAKE
Name on same page
Charles Searle DELEWARE

9 Aug 1868 All Saints, Wandsworth, Wandsworth
Charles Searle Deleworr age 24, occ watchmaker
Father: Charles Deleworr occ veterinary Surgeon
Ellen Drake age 21 father James occ  labourer
Looks as if Charles signature is Delewarr - see attachment

Not found them on 1871 census to confirm surname/s or his occupation nor have I found a birth entry
c1844 for a Charles Searle Delewarr on FreeBMD or GRO indexes or on 1851 census with father named Charles  ???
The surname could be badly transcribed  :-\

Is this the 1946 death entry for the Charles Cyril De Le Warr Boxall  with probate 1847 death 12 May 1946) as Charles Searle Boxall  :-\

BOXALL, CHARLES  SEARLE age 75  (born c1871)
1946  J Quarter in BROMLEY  Volume 02A  Page 871

Hoping the above makes some sort of sense and that I have not confused matters........

There might be some truth in Jack jnr's father being a valet. Maybe he was the valet to someone called Anstruther. Jack would have been conceived about August 1911, then born in Bradford district. But we don't know if Mary met him in Fulham or nearby and returned to Yorkshire for the birth or left Fulham after the 1911 census and met Jack's father in Yorkshire and stayed there for the birth.
The de la Warr connection is a bit odd, surely more to it than just liking the name. Not only did she give the name to Jack but retrospectively to Frank. Have you investigated the Boxall connection?. Lizzie,
Thanks for you flexible thinking.

I notice that John ANTRETTER was living in Kennington South London, Not exactly on Mary's doorstep....

Spotted this chap but it may be a common surname.

I have followed the de la WARR / BOXALL families just to see if there was any distant family connection.
Of course the BOXALL family might be relatives of Jack ANSTRUTHER [senior] or Valet to the DE LA WARR or ANSTRUTHER families.
Mary does not seem very familiar with this ancestry as she registers Jack [jnr] as 'de le war', or of course it could be just what the registrar heard Mary say.

Thank you again for your extensive research for the De La WARR connections in your last message.  Over the years, I have also been all around the houses with this name.  As it is held-onto over several generation, they must have thought that it had some connection with some family of note, even via illegitimacy.
