Cornish name meaning?
« on: Tuesday 16 March 21 12:47 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone have any idea what the name Clydia or Clydja might mean? In the context of a possible house name from the Census. I've also seen it spelled with a K.

Several times my ancestors have listed this as a residence in Sennen Cove, Cornwall, but the closest I can find is reference to a river in Turkey?

Someone in my family built a house in Watford in the 1920s and named it after a district of Cairo they had been to in WW1, so it could be named after a foreign place.

In these baptisms, 1880- 1889 there are several families showing Clydia as their abode.

https://sennencornwall.tripod.com/baptisms_1880.htm

They can be seen in 1881 census e.g.

1881 2351/81/14

James and Jane George - residence Carlidga
Strick - Escalls Cliff
Henry and Alice Nicholas - Carlidga

I wonder if Clydia is a contraction of Carlidga?

I hope this works - Old maps - Clidga. I think you have to select 1876, enlarge view and you can scroll down  - Mayon Green, Escalls Green, Sunny Corner and then Clidga.

Those places can be seen in 1881 census quoted.

I've seen it spelled like that too.

Excellent find. That's almost certainly it! A cottage and surrounding area.

Easier way to do this  ::)

Yet another spelling. Clidga. That's the one.

Clidga means muddy area?  How charming. :D
