Whitstable road lookup request
« on: Wednesday 17 March 21 13:21 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I'm trying to locate Ludgate Hill, Whitstable, for 1920 to 1939.  I've been poring over the OS 6" and OS 25" maps for the period on the NLS website to no avail.  I've found all sorts of roads with Hill in them but not Ludgate.  The road is listed in the 1920, 1921 electoral registers: it doesn't appear to be very long, which makes me think it's one of those back alleys too small to be annotated.
My primary search is for Ernest and Eleanor STUTELY in the 1939 Register (no entries).  The list of missing places in the 1939 Register on Findmypast is, er, limited.

Any help appreciated.

Did they have a daughter Ena as they are in Whitstable in 1939 but not where you are looking.

Maybe you need to search as Stuteley

Thanks Rattus.  Been to Whitstable a couple of times, the Google image brought back a memory or two.  Nice to see the 'flat iron' building still there.

Rosie99: Yes they did, b1903, also a son b1904.  I don't have an FindMyPast sub but my LA relative does.  I'll ask him to check that out for me.  Nice one, thanks.

There is a picture of 3 Ludgate Hill in this image - http://www.dover-kent.com/Pubs/South-Eastern-Tavern-Whitstable.html

On the 1891 census, Rachel Blyth was the Licensed Victualer, living there, aged 40.

I think it might be the Pub shown on this map - https://www.old-maps.co.uk/#/Map/610760/166915/12/101095

Hi David, thanks for the links.  The first one is amusing.  The second link for the map looks like the same map I was poring over.  The pub certainly looks in the right place on the map - definitely for the harbour workers!! rgds

Thank you for the reply grandarog.  Edward died in December 1940 unfortunately - wonder if it was WWII related?
