Costermonger near Leicester Square (Branch) Post Office
« on: Wednesday 17 March 21 13:25 GMT (UK) »
I'm hoping someone can identify the location in this ancient postcard view. Is it the Midland's town Leicester Square? as it does not appear to tally with the (perhaps) more well-known Square of the same title in Central London. The confusing thing is the 'W.C.' addition to the nameboard which would fit the London postal area. I am guessing the view is pre WW1. Any help welcomed.

I don't think there was a Leicester Square in Leicester itself, was there?

Looking v hard at the picture, does that say "pharmacie francais" on the building to the right and towards the back of the picture? There was one of that name on Greek St, London, in the 19th century.

According to the British History website, nos 10 to 15 on the north side of Leicester Square were used as a Post Office for some years from 1879.  The present building on the site was erected in 1898-9.

Excellent Drosybont, exactly what I had hoped to find from a directory listing - but failed miserably in my attempts, not least because I hadn't picked the correct era! Job done I feel. Thanks for all contributions.
