Barnardo's -George Goodwin bible/prayer book.
« on: Wednesday 17 March 21 20:25 GMT (UK) »
A needle in a haystack but worth a try.
Granddad George Goodwin born London 1893/5  had a bible inscribed to him by Barnardo's around late 1890's to early 1900.   After he died gran dealt with his possessions and told daughters their dad was a Barnardo boy.  Barnardo's have no records of him having been in their homes?.  Gran died in Edensor Derbyshire in 1987 and no trace of bible was found.   Would be wonderful if it still exists to glean any information it might contain.  There was a George (ours?) in St. Joseph's institute but don't think it had a connection to Barnardo's

Also in Marylebone

GOODWIN, GEORGE  DUXBURY
Q4 1895
MARYLEBONE  Volume 01A  Page 545

Again no mother's maiden name. There's a baptism for this George - mother Fanny, no father noted

Do yuo know what his occupation was - and what was your Gran's name. If we can find them in 1939 that might give a better date of birth

1901 cenus has 3 Goodwins in the orphanage inFarnborough

John b c1888
George b c1893
Alice b c1895

This fits a family group admitted to the Greenwich workhouse in 1896 - those three, plus Mary b c 1885

25 August  admitted. Note: mother in custody
30 September: Mary, JOhn & George sent to Sutton schools
13 November: Alice possibly discharged (name may be crossed out)
14 November: John and George return to workhouse and are taken out by mother
1 April 1897: Mary taken out by mother

Fits a group of children with mother's maiden name Lynch - the older two b St Olaves Southwark, the younger in Greenwich

There's also an admission in 1892 to Greenwich of George aged 33, labourer of 34 Mill Lane and children Robert b c1885 (alos mmn Lynch) and Mary b c 1886. Children noted as Roman Catholic

Alice appears still to be in an institution in 1911 - a convent in Dovercourt

Marriages Q4 1881    Greenwich    1d   1478
GOODWIN    George
LYNCH    Julia

1891 - Bermondsey. All born there

George Goodwin    32 - waterside labourer (docks)
Julia Goodwin    32
Robert Goodwin    6
Mary Goodwin    4
John Goodwin    2
Annie Goodwin    1

1901 Julia is in St Olave Southwark workhouse. Canvas sack maker b Deptford. It appears she dies in 1909. George snr is in the workhouse infirmary and appears to die in 1903

This doesn't mean they're your family, but the workhouse/institution links seem interesting
