Best family (Ireland - Canada)
« on: Thursday 18 March 21 01:48 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for some information on my great grandparents. For years our family have been trying to figure out the name of the ship that they came from Portadown Ireland to somewhere in Quebec on. We think we may have found some information involving the SS Marburn but we are not certain as none of us can seem to find any records, pictures, etc.

Any information we currently have include:

Arrived in Canada: May 21, 1923
My great-grandfather: Joseph Henry Best
Great-grandmother: Lucy Best (Willis)

My great aunt (their first born) would have been an infant when they came over. Her name was Phoebe but the only infant I can find that they had at the time was someone named Eileen and we're not sure if she had a middle name that none of us knew about or who this child could have been otherwise.

Welcome to RootsChat, jadaar  :)

Joseph Best married Lucy Willis on 8th May 1923   in Armagh R.D. (just four days before they left Belfast).

This is a much better link to Joseph's birth record. Joseph Henry born 1896.

Just adding that this marriage record is available at GRONI - https://geni.nidirect.gov.uk/

You will need to open an account and buy some credits. It costs £2.50 (sterling) to view a certificate.

I forgot IE is the one site you don't have to log into and can link direct  ::)

Thanks for the reminder.

Here is the marriage of Joseph Best's father James Hunter Best to Margaret Maria Carson in 1893.If you don't already have:

https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1894/10569/5850278.pdf

Here is his previous marriage to Mary Jane Murdoch:

https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1882/10964/8007479.pdf

A daughter named Mary Jane from James Hunter Best's first marriage to Mary Jane Murdoch:

https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1883/02752/2010900.pdf

Son William Best born to James Hunter and Margaret Maria Carson:

https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1900/02010/1772139.pdf

James Hunter Best and Margaret Maria Carson with family in census 1911. Joseph's middle name is Henry after his grandpa Henry Carson:

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Armagh/Richhill/Ballyloughan/1018661/

Doing the math from the census 1911-23 is 1874...but census is usually off because its rounded up or down and sometimes guessed roughly. It took some searching but I finally found the birth of Margaret Maria Carson. She was born November 5th 1887 at Bellaghy...

https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1887/02541/1940486.pdf

Margaret Maria Carson's parents:  Henry Carson (farmer) and wife Hannah Allen

Marriage of above couple:

https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1886/10833/5951256.pdf

Henry Carson's father's name is Thomas
Hannah Allen's father's name is Benjamin

Benjamin Allen's passing in fairly sure:
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1898/05842/4654807.pdf

Thomas Carson's passing possibly (worth looking into):
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1884/06309/4808917.pdf

I found a Lucinda born with a mother Willis and it kind of fits even though her surname is Major. The dates line up and I can't find a Lucinda Willis born with dates correct. Could it be possible Lucinda Major gets listed as Lucinda Willis? The mother's name is listed as Ellen but signed as Lucinda Willis. Checked and no Lucinda Major gets married later.

https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1902/01915/1742538.pdf

The above family seems to be in the following census , the year before the above Lucinda was born:

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Armagh/Portadown_Urban/Jervis_Street/1029919/

Maybe that's off track...

I'm not 100% sure if I'm replying to the right post, I'm still new to this. But does anyone know where this picture was found? We're trying to figure out who the children are? Thank you everyone so much for your help so far
