To give some sort of background and perhaps a few clues as to where William was and indeed his father George were in 1861, listed below is what I have from kind Rootschat members a good year or so ago. Would William's Death Certificate give DOB and where born as in later certificates? William does not seem to know where he originated as there appears to be conflicting locations given ie  Great Clacton, Newport and Bristol! If this is info is considered too much please say and I will delete some of it. Thanks as always. Robin

I don't know when they started putting place of birth on death certificates,  I have only seen it on more recent ones.

Thankyou both rosie99 and Milliepede regarding Death Certificates, I have seen mid 1900's the use of DOB and where born on Certificates, I just wondered how far back this practice went, I was hoping 1899! I suspect that William comes from Newport Monmouthshire based on the fact that the earliest info I have of him is in the 1871 Census aged 20 whilst in the Army at Aldershot, and my warped logic suggests to me the earlier the age the more likely that the information gleaned is to be accurate. It certainly is a teaser this one!

You osprey along with others did a tremendous amount of work on this back in June, but it all seemed in the end to lead up blind alleys, I thought I would clear the decks and have a fresh look! I purposely took a break over the winter and decided to have another look now. Thanks for all you did previously, it was much appreciated.
