Thanks got it.  Looking everywhere for the birth baptism of MARY JANE STOCKMAN (Blank) in Somerset and Devon.  Nothing found as yet.  May just have to buy the marriage certificate.  Looked on Free Reg/bmd family search.  Nothing!!  Oh well.  Will keep digging around.  Many thanks Dianna

It refers to a private baptism usually done at home because the child may not survive, and then publicly 'received in to the church' at a later date when the child was considered out of danger.
It actually says:
1834 Nov 7 privately; publicly rec'd Dec 7.
Squance, Lillicrap, Dankester, Surtees, Yates

Hi thank you for the explanation of the baptism DOB7.  He could have been born prematurely possibly if my maths are correct, at least he survived until 1874!

I am curious also about some information supplied kindly by Mabel:-  In reference to the below?  Was it usual for the mothers surname to be mentioned in these early records?  I thought it was much later in the 1900's?  Is that correct?  I assume these two birth registers come from the GRO!

Many thanks Dianna

Yes - GRO site now  has mother's maiden name for births much earlier than used to be the case

Just for the record this appears to be the parents marriage:-

Married on 16th March 1834 at Tormoham.  William Stockman to Catherine Doyle both of this parish. Witness appears to be John Stockman.
