Searching for children of a relative outside of marriage
« on: Saturday 20 March 21 21:01 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I am looking for a way to search for any potential children of my grandmother.

At the moment the method I am using on FreeBMD is to search for children born to a mother with the same surname, then (very slowly) eliminating each entry off the list by searching for marriages where the surname is different to the mothers maiden name (where it is the same I can't eliminate).

This still leaves quite a long list of birth certificates I need to request.

Is there another way to do this?

Which country?

What's your grandmothers name/maiden-name?

England. The maiden name is Brundle.

What time frame/ area are you looking at?
That would narrow down the choices.

Is there a particular reason why you think she may have had children before she married (if she did) or are you  checking 'just in case' :-)

I was told she only had one child (my father). I subsequently found out that she was married to another man prior to my father being born and she had a child with them.  I wanted to check whether there might be any other children. I have managed to reduce the search down to 10 potential children, I was just wondering whether there was anyway of searching further without resorting to requesting Birth Certificates.

Rootschat has a strict no living persons policy and you cannot post details of people who may still be living

All births you have listed need to be removed

What was her marital status on the marriage cert to your grandfather?  What surname did she marry him under?

What was her fathers full name on that cert?

Thanks. Apologies, I have updated my post.

I have already traced back the previous marriage and birth in 1938 and have the certificates for both.

She subsequently had a second child (my father) who was born in 1945. His birth was original registered under her married name with father unknown which was subsequently updated in 1947 when she married my grandfather.

I'm not sure whether she was still married to her previous husband at the time of my fathers birth or was in the process of getting divorced.

His birth was original registered under her married name

So you have her previous married name.  She married in 1938 but her maiden name was Brundle. Is that correct?

She had a child to that marriage - also in 1938

She had your father in 1945 and registered him under her married name but he was illegitimate

She married your grandfather in 1947

So we have quite a short time span for any other possible children prior to that 1947 marriage - 1939 - 1944 so I am puzzled as to why the list of births you originally posted went beyond 1947.

If she had other children between 1939-1944 - given she registered your father under her married name - wouldn't it be likely she would do the same with any others?

So you should be looking for births under her married name with maiden name Brundle between those dates
