Reginald Bertram
« on: Sunday 21 March 21 07:44 GMT (UK) »
Hello everyone.  A member has very kindly advised me about Roots Chat and I am hoping someone may be able to help me as I have hit a brick wall! I live in the UK and am searching for any information regarding my grandfather.  He moved to Canada around 1925 permanently after going to and fro from the UK several times. His name was Reginald Jack Bertram, he was born in the UK on 23rd March1988 to Annette Howcroft and Francis Bertram. He died on 8th May 1975 in Westminster Hospital, London Middlesex and is buried in Woodlands Cemetary, London Middlesex Ontario as he served in the first world war in the Princess Patricias Canadian Light Infantry in 1914. He had two sons with my grandmother in the UK one being my father but married another lady called Lilian Todd in 1916 in the UK who moved to Canada with him.  I have been able to locate him when he was in the UK and his military records but unable to trace him once he to moved to Canada permanently .  Thank you for reading.  Judith

I assume you meant he was born 1888 but there is no GRO index around that time or FreeBMD death in 1975?

Welcome to Rootschat  :D

I found his grave details on Find a Grave which stated that he was 90 when he died.  So that gives a birth year of 1884/1885.

No birth can be found for those years.

I've just found his Canadian service papers which show him as Reginald John Bertram born 23rd March 1885.  His birth year was originally written as 1889.

As you know John is interchangeable with Jack.

He was a farmer at the time he signed up.  Next of kin appears to be a Miss Mabel Longdon of 72 Buckingham Gate, London.

Details from here

https://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/discover/military-heritage/first-world-war/personnel-records/Pages/item.aspx?IdNumber=41360

I think the Aunt may be Congdon rather than Longdon.  Reginald appears to have signed up on 20th August 1914.  Am I looking at the right Reginald I wonder?

This is a link to his service papers

https://central.bac-lac.gc.ca/.item/?op=pdf&app=CEF&id=B0693-S029

It's very long, 53 pages, but it may be worth while looking through it for any useful information.

Looking at his movements he won't be on the 1921 Canada census as he arrived after it was taken but he should be on the UK 1921 census.  Possibly the only record you will find after that year will be if he registered to vote in Canada.
