I only say that - as his mum appears to not have registered his birth/ in the column for children born alive - has left it blank! He thought he came from Leamington Spa - which is where his obvious close female family members are in 1911. There is a photo of him as a little boy (about 3) - with the name JS Bywater on the back. I think he was with them. Wasn’t 1911 first yr people filled out themselves? But I would love to be proved wrong but I have looked for Leslies with any surname but ?? No joy

The number of children are only indicated if the couple are married.  There is no column for any children born to a single mother.

It does say Children born alive to present marriage.

What about my suggestion that he was with a relative and recorded under that relative's surname and not his?  A married aunt perhaps.

It’s possible. His mum only had one sister and she was with mum. Brothers are all Gadsbys. I suppose could be another relative from grandparents side but not obvious. It’s hard

Hi

You say he lived with an Aunt, we know 1911 it
was not Beatrice, his Mother’s only sister so need to narrow down time line in order to discover who this may have been.

They all appear to be in Middlesex when Reginald Matthews was born Sept q. 1907, so what other
Relations to you know of who were in Middlesex about this time?

This is assuming it was an actual relation who he knew as Aunt.

I still think he is with them in Leamington! Only because they then come away to Canada and then back to London and Leslie told my grandmother (his wife) that he thought he came from Leamington Spa. He lived in London as a young working man and older - so must have been in Leamington as a young boy. Is it such a leap that he would be missed from a census that they filled in themselves - especially as I think birth not registered until he was 16?  I have someone else on another side of family down as a niece on 1911 census - when infact was a daughter from before the marriage.  It’s just unpicking the secrets!

Update: just found birth cert that I ordered a few years ago. was registered in 1923. Born Date 1907.
No father.. Registered by MA Bywater (mother) Mothers Details MA Gadsby, now the wife of JS Bywater , A Brewers Clerk....  Any clue's there?  Just wondered would JS Bywater's occupation normally be stated, as husband of the mother?  Many thanks

The re-registration doesn't state JS Bywater as being the legitimate/biological father...

"Handwritten entry - X Bywater Leslie Islington 1B S/23"

If I recall correctly, the 'S' in the registration no. is indicative of adoption although in this case it's not obvious whether it was a legal adoption by JS or simply because of the change of circumstances & surname of the mother?

Maybe AntonyMMM can explain?

It would be normal for the husband's occ. to be included.
