WW2 Burma Soldier Help
« on: Sunday 21 March 21 16:45 GMT (UK) »
Hi  :)

I have very recently started delving into our family history, inspired by wanting to find out more about my Grandad's involvement in World War Two. He did not speak much of his involvement in the war but we know he fought in Burma.

I am told that I can obtain further information if I source his death certificate and write to the MOD which I am hoping to do but I wondered if anybody was able to shed any light on potentially regiments etc based on the attached image of him in his uniform? I can see there is some sort of colouring/band above his top pocket too but I am not sure what this refers to?

Any help or information much appreciated, I really would like to find out more as I feel if I don't his story will be lost.

Thanks!

Kirsty

They are his Medal ribbons above his pocket. Unfortunately his hat badge is too in distinct to tell anything from that.

Ah thank you! I can’t quite make out the colouring of the Ribbons which is a shame but that’s helpful to know thanks  :)

Thank you Ellenmai and Paco, this is helpful I'll have a look into this!

I am hoping to order a copy of my Grandad's death certificate soon and then write to the MOD so hopefully they will be able to provide me with further details but the snippets you are providing are really interesting so thank you  :)

I sent for both my parents Military records from WW2 & was quite disappointed there wasn't that much personal information, just where they were stationed, dates of arrival & departure & rank or promotions & medals awarded. My father was in hospital for ten days while serving in Burma which it did mention, but a lot of it is was abbreviated. A very kind member of our forum Max deciphered it all for me, otherwise I wouldn't have understood hardly any of it.

hi kirsty,if you don't mind telling your Grandad's name and possible place of residence there may be a chance our member's can chance on some information. It's always risky trying to ID medal ribbons as
most of these WW2  portraits were colourised as opposed to being taken in colour so they were not
always accurate,

You apply for service records here:
https://www.gov.uk/get-copy-military-service-records/apply-for-someone-elses-records
And pay £30.
Then wait. I think there is approximately a twelve month wait at the moment from what others have been saying.
All worth it I think.

Father in law who was in Royal Signals in Burma had the slouch hat.
