Looking for any information on Walter Maxwell before 1845.  Born County Cavan about 1822.  Moved to Airdrie in Scotland about 1848  Married Ann Jane Falconer in August 1843 in County Monaghan.

I see they had just the one child Margaret in Scotland and then everyone else is from Ireland... including mother-in-law Margaret Maxwell. Was she not married to Walter's father? Then there is a sister-in-law to Walter named Eliza Falconer...

Lived at Stanrigg, South Row at the time in 1851 as a coal miner. Is it possible he was doing mining in Cavan area during the famine years?

Hi Alan
Many thanks for your reply.  I think the famine is the reason they went to Scotland. It’s possible he was a miner in Ireland. I can find no trace of the family in Ireland.  I have a lot of info after 1851 on the family. As far as I know Margaret Maxwell was married to Samuel Maxwell and was a widow

They do seem to have had more children Alan, after the 1851 census.

Their son Walter's birth in 1864 www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FQP5-VG3 should include date and place of marriage back in Ireland.

So, sounds like you have been able to confirm Walter's parents' names from his death reg (?). Did his mother Margaret also die in Scotland to let you confirm her parents' details?

Monica

Added: What was mother Margaret's maiden name?

It just says August 1843 Ireland for the wedding...but that is at least a confirmation. Says he was a collier in 1864 still in Stanrigg and his signature is there.

As you say, help with confirmation...but we could have done with a specific place in Ireland  ;)

Is Walter Maxwell 1822's wife and mother both maiden-name Falconer?

I see it written as father: Samuel and mother Margaret Falconer...also that she died 19 APR 1872 also in Airdrie Scotland.Sounds like you may have this document already?

I'm trying to grasp how Margaret "Maxwell" 66 in the census could be Walter's mother-in-law... who if not Walter's father did she marry to become a Maxwell? Maybe I'm missing the obvious?

I can tell by the address she lived at in death (18 knox street) being the same one an Angie on Ancestry gave for Margaret Maxwell's death that you are the same person.

Here's the thing. When I looked at the document Margaret's father's surname does not look like Falconer. I took it over to Rootschats amazing hand-writing experts and they quickly decoded it as:

Fachender

Now that could be a mishearing of Falconer or a separate surname altogether. Do you have any other documents saying Margaret Maxwell's  father is surname Falconer? Do you have any docs of Falconer marrying Falconer?

Now I see Walter's grave and of course Ann Jane's last name is obviously Falconer as it is on the other documents...so Fachender must be a butchery of Falconer.

So , trying to keep this straight... Ann Jane Falconer's married to Walter Maxwell and her parents are Thomas Falconer and Margaret Maxwell. Meanwhile Walter Maxwell's parents are Samuel Maxwell and Margaret Falconer... I think I have it now.
