Melletts and Flanagans in Lissatava area, County Mayo
« on: Monday 22 March 21 20:21 GMT (UK) »
My great, great grandmother, Winnifred Mellett,  was born in Lissatava, Co Mayo, in 1861. Her parents were John Mellett and Winifred Flanagan and her grandfather Thomas Mellett was a farmer with about 45 acres in Lissatava. He died in 1865, aged 80. The name was spelled variously Mellett/Millett/Mylette.  I believe Thomas or his brother was also a teacher in the area.  I have an old, hard to read map, and a very tiny photograph of the area.

Winnifred Mellett emigrated to the United States and married in Chicago.  One of Winnifred's daughters, Nellie (my great-grandmother) married a man of Cornish descent.

I am interested in, 1) learning more about the family geneology, and, 2) wonder if there are any current family existing that may be interested internet chatting.

Thank you for your kind consideration and time.

Glenda :)

Welcome to Rootschat, Glenda

This is a useful site for civil registrations (from 1864)
https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/.  It is free - you just need to prove you are not a robot  :)

I see from a published tree some basic information re your family.
From that site above, here is the marriage of Mary Mellett
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1897/10446/5803974.pdf

Here is that family, with Mary’s father John Mellett in 1901.

And 1911

If you have not already done so, you might want to look around those sites for other family members.  :)

Here's the townland of Lissatava in the Civil Parish of Kilcommon. It's east north-east of Ballinrobe.
