Father's profession on baptismal record?

There's one word on these Baptismal Records I can't read and that's the father's profession. I'm looking at the two Murray entries, one for John (b. 22.8.1818) and the other for Florence (b. 4.1.1819). They both have the same parents (William Murray and Helen Darling), although I'm not quite sure how this gap works biologically... was Florence adopted? And Florence as a boy's name...?!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I agree with Hind. I had to look it up to see what it is!

Hind was a general term for a farm servant or agricultural labourer. However, in some regions it was a farm bailiff or steward.

Thank you for your swift responses. They lived in the Scottish borders, so farm hind ('hand', I guess?) makes sense. He went on to become a brewer in Jedburgh and his son William became the most successful wool merchant in Scotland. Alas the second generation blew it all, but it's an interesting story from very humble origins.

My 3 x great grandfather was a hind. He wrote about it to his brother in Canada recalling how they were  both  hinds to a local farmer.  They lived in the Borders 1780s - 1830s.

One of the dates, probably the earlier one is obviously wrong. This is not unusual where no record was made at the time and then added when a subsequent child was baptised. The days are probably correct, but a slip has been made with the year.

Florence was originally mainly a boy's name. Florence Nightingale popularised it for girls. To say nothing of Florence from the Magic Roundabout.

I have this a couple of times, where children were born obscenely close together. One in particular is 100% the same parents, so we had to assume that the earlier child was actually born the year before and the vicar was so used to writing 1800 that he miswrote it.

News to me, GR2. I was going to suggest the same again (was used to writing son, not concentrating etc). I like Florence as a girl's name, I never imagined it for a boy but if you think of it as a place name it might make more sense. Then again, Evelyn was also a boys name, as well as a lot of others that we'd consider exclusively female now. I'd certainly be inclined to trace Florence to check, mind you.
