Keeping up with Answering Email
« on: Tuesday 23 March 21 06:14 GMT (UK) »
Hello All,

I know I am a disorganised person but having gmail is not helping.

Some years ago, when I had another email provider, it all came in through Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 and I had numerous folders set up, eg DNA, Hodgson, Urgent Answer, and as I read each email I moved it to the appropriate folder.

I don't think I can do that with gmail.

Sometimes you don't want to answer an email the same day - it needs some thought - and I am finding that these emails slip out of sight.

Please tell me what you do.

Is there a programme I can put in front of gmail to do the same thing as my ancient programme used to do? Or can I still use it - but how do I set it up.

Thank you for listening to me,
Jean

Gmail uses Labels instead of Folders

I use gmail and  have lots of emails in folders.  I use Thunderbird so maybe it's their system, but I can just click on "Inbox" and there is an option to make a new folder.  I do that, name it and then put in emails I want to deal with later.

Other emails to do with family history etc. I file away to folders I have under My Documents on Word.

I use MS Outlook partly because I have lots of different subject matter off line folders.   I have three different email providers, one of which is gmail - it works fine with Outlook

My husband uses Outlook and gmail and he has folders on Outlook for emails he needs to look at again, regarding Bridge, etc.

Like Lizzie's husband I use Outlook and create folders for particular subjects.  My grocery orders and Amazon orders are just two of them.

Goodness Me, you are all so organised.

Thank you tonepad for the link to gmail "Labels". However I don't think that's quite what I need.

I will have to see if I remember how I set up Outlook in the first place, and perhaps I can replicate that.
Thank you

'Labels' are exactly the same as folders. Only the name is different.
You simply file your emails under the appropriate 'label', exactly as you would file them in a 'folder' in outlook.

I have a folder (it could be a label) called PENDING.

Then I can look at this regularly to see what I put in it to 'think about', and then if I respond I can put the whole thing into the right permanent folder or label.

there's no reason you couldn't have various PENDING ones, too - perhaps one for orders you've placed online and want to keep your original order receipt until you've got the goods/one for genealogical queries/one for family queries etc etc etc
