I only found out today when arthurk posted this on another thread

Is this for privacy reasons?

In that post I also wrote "Presumably there's some reason for this change, but I don't know what it is" and I'd hoped someone would take the hint and explain, but so far no-one has.

Hi
Ignorance here sorry.
What is the earliest date you can get mothers maiden name?
Without taking a punt and paying for the certificate?

Thank you

Hi
Thanks for the response.
I know if you order the certificate you get mother's maiden name

BUT
Sorry! I must have been unclear.
I meant what was the earliest date the mother's maiden name appears in the index
so one can confirm before ordering etc. and if so which index ie GRO or FindMyPast or ...
Or find a mother's maiden name when you know its your person of interest
 without ordering the certificate.

Thank you

I assume it must be to try and protect people's security arthur i.e. people having their mother's maiden names as bank security questions etc., however the fact all that information is on FreeBMD/Findmypast/Ancestry would seem to make it seem somewhat pointless unless it is just done for legal reasons?

The index on the GRO website gives the mothers maiden surname from 1837.
eg
HODGSON, JANE       DODD
GRO Reference: 1837  S Quarter in LANCASTER  Volume 21  Page 333
