Trying to find information on Martha M Brown
« on: Tuesday 23 March 21 20:12 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find out further information on my great great grandfather's sister Martha M Brown. The only reference I have found of her so far is in the 1871 census in Abbots Bromley in Staffordshire. The details are:

Robert Brown, aged 36, joiner, born in Abbots Bromley, Staffordshire
Lucy Brown, aged 42, school mistress, born in Burton upon Trent, Staffordshire (maiden name Coates)
Robert Brown, aged 3, born in Abbots Bromley (my great great grandfather)
Martha M Brown, aged 7, scholar, born in London, Middlesex.

Based on the above census, Martha was born about 1864. I haven't been able to find a birth certificate, baptism or christening for her yet. I am not sure of her middle name based on her initial 'M'. I haven't found a marriage for her or a burial or death certificate.

Martha isn't living with her family in the 1881 census. They are living with Lucy's sister Mary Mason in Horninglow, Burton upon Trent. I have been unable to find Martha in other censuses.

Whilst I can trace my Brown and Coates families back in time and my great great grandfather Robert's life, I have been unable to find anything further on his sister.

Thank you in advance for any help or advice.  :)

Hi heywood,

Thank you for your response. Lucy wasn't married previously. My 3x great grandparents Robert Brown and Lucy Coates married 16th May 1864 in St Luke's Church, Birmingham. They were residing in Bristol Street. Lucy's father is John Coates on the certificate, a tailor.

Lucy Coates was born in 1826 in Burton upon Trent and baptised in 1837 to parents John Coates (a tailor) and Ann (nee Bromhall).

In the 1861 census, Lucy Coates was living in Abbots Bromley as a school mistress, with her widowed mother Ann Coates.

It does make me wonder whether their daughter Martha M Brown may have been illegitimate, if she was born approximately the year her parents married?

Kindest regards,

ALewis

Kindest regards,
