Mary New b. 1774 Ashbury Berkshire found in USA
« on: Thursday 25 March 21 04:33 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
We are trying to find more information on Mary New b. 1774 at Ashbury, Berkshire, UK who married Thomas Francis Vincent in 1798 at Franklin, Virginia.

Mary New was daughter of Joseph New b. 1748 and Elizabeth Hide who lived in Ashbury UK.
It appears that Mary Vincent died in 1841 at Kentucky, USA.

It's a long way back, but would love to find any information on Mary New's migration to the U.S.A. in those early days. Her parents died in the UK, and don't know whether she travelled with other siblings, or just reasons for her travel.   Are there any records available to search for her immigration available.

Passenger list information is scantily recorded back then.  :-\

The 1810 census is a numerical one and only lists the head of household but there is a chance this could be your Thomas & Family in Franklin Virginia.

If this isn't yours and you haven't seen it,  it may be interesting.
Wiki tree entry seems to suggest that they moved to Muhlenberg County, Kentucky and Thomas died there in 1848. (son of Charles and Suzannah Vincent) Thomas born 1869 Bedford County Virginia.
Son of I Charles Vincent and Susannah Vincent - Husband of Mary Vincent
Father of George W. Vincent; John Swallow Vincent - Squire Vincent - John Swallow Vincent and Squire Vincent Brother of II Charles Vincent, Jr -  Sr. John Vincent - Ruth McElvain - Susannah Abshire; Sarah Vincent and 6 others.

Also an extensive tree on ancestry but sadly no immigration information.

Hi, yes that is a consideration, my research has shown that our Mary New was baptised on 20.6.1773 Ashbury, daughter of Joseph New and Elizabeth Hide.
It is confusing, I know  I have posted her birth as 1774, this is as a result of our cousin and myself finding a DNA match with descendants of Mary New who married Thomas Vincent, which is shown on Ancestry Tree of these descendants.

If we could find shipping records for Mary New travelling to the States, maybe we could then determine that we have the right Mary New.

Indexed as Thomas Vincen at familysearch. There is a Charles Vincen on the next line.

There is a William New in Franklin, VA in 1810

That far back, you might find passenger records and you might not. This site has a lot of old passenger lists but I've never really figured out an easy way to search them. Instead I tried a site search from Google, e.g.,

site:https://www.immigrantships.net/ "new, mary"

I didn't find Mary. You could look for Thomas V or William New.

this link might help also
https://immigrantships.net/newcompass/pcindex.html

thoughts:
where was this William New from?
Where was Thomas Vincent from?
When did Thomas Vincent and William New arrive in VA?

"Today I learned:" 1790 and 1800 censuses of Virginia were destroyed in the war of 1812.

https://www.lva.virginia.gov/public/guides/va2_1790census.htm

The link mentions some substitutes, but just scanning the page, it looks like the latest is a 1785 tax enumeration.

---
Are there land records for Franklin Co. When did Thomas V and William N buy land? Any deals between the two?
Are there probate records? Are the families mentioned in each other's wills?

Sandra, thanks very much for that, yes we knew they moved to Muhlenberg, Kentucky where Thomas Vincent died.   No I hadn't seen that information before, we are trying to match up our DNA matches with various descendants of this Vincent family.   It is quite complicated.
It just would have been good to have found some records for Mary's immigration, we wonder why she went to the United States having lived in a small village of Ashbury in Berkshire, England.  She married Thomas Francis Vincent in the States, apparently met him over there.  Were there any other New family members that also went there.

Am confused on this, as I did a search on Family Search and found Mary New daughter of Joseph & Elizabeth New as having married William Mills in 1799 at Ashbury and later two daughters born Hester Mills b. 1799 and Jane Mills b. 1803, so really trying to clarify the correct family.

The DNA matching though with Vincent descendants has taken us on this new investigation.

Did he send for her maybe? Where was he from, any clue?

and regarding the US family  - Do their trees say where their Mary New was from? - I assume they don't, or you wouldn't be asking here, but I'm just asking the obvious. It's hard to tell on the internet just how much a person already knows without asking.
