Stephen McCallion from Cairncastle
« on: Thursday 25 March 21 11:51 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

I am trying to find more about Stephen McCallion abt.1885, Ballysillan, Caircastle, Antrim. I think I found the right person on the 1901 and 1911 Irish Census, living with his parents Robert (1854) and Catherine (1861), living in Ballyruther, Carncastle, Antrim in 1911.

Stephen McCallion was in the Merchant Navy, he survived the sinking of the Bay Fisher 7th Feb 1941, and was taken to Dundee.

I can find no other records for Stephen, can you help?

Just linking, for others, the 1901 and 1911 censuses.

1901 census
Residents of a house 24 in Corkermaine (Cairncastle, Antrim)
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Antrim/Cairncastle/Corkermaine/994476/

1911 census
Residents of a house 7 in Ballyruther (Carncastle, Antrim)
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Antrim/Carncastle/Ballyruther/194486/

1911 says Robert married 10 years, 1 child born, 1 still living. So Catherine probably his second wife......can't find their marriage.

No sign of Stephen's birth record.

If you are searching for Merchant Navy records for Stephen McCallion, I would first of all get  of hold of the last Logbook and Crew Agreement of BAY FISHER ex TARNWATER official number 143599
If you do not have it. This should tell you his Discharge A number. This number is unique to him and is an essential aid in find MN personal records. Available from

https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/results/r?name=Search&_cr1=BT%20381/1381&_aq=143599

Search via official number

Once you have his dis A number, you can then go on to find his form CRS10. This will tell you all the ships he served from early 1941, together with dates and place's of engagement and discharge.

If anywhere it should be here.
https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/results/r?_cr=bt382%2F1060&_dss=range&_ro=any&_st=adv

These records are stored alphabetically in blocks of 60 names.
You would be best served attending Kew yourself when they reopen.

I can find no Seamans Pouch nor any medal entitlements. Do you have his medals?

I have a copy of the official Survivors Report of BAY FISHER. If you would like a copy, send your e-mail address via PM.
I don't know if you have seen this picture from the Ships Nostalgia site.

Robert's first marriage??
Robert MCKILLIAN to Margaret HOEY on 5th August 1876.

Robert living at Ballycoos

I had wondered about that marriage. Earlier I posted a possible first wife -  death of a Mary McCallion at Sallagh, Cairncastle. Anyhow, gone back to check and she died after giving birth. Looked at  births, and she had a son Henry, born Sallagh. Husband named Robert, herself named as Mary Ann and to me, what looks to be Hoey

Could Margaret and Mary Ann have been one and the same?

Mmm...checked the Robert/Margaret marriage again, and one of witnesses seems to have been a Mary Ann Hoey.

There is a Margaret in the Hoey household at 1901 and 1911, unmarried. Just thinking out loud in case it is a possibility..... wondering if the female names on the marriage entry of Robert were inadvertently swapped and should have been married Mary, witnessed by Margaret.

Also, some of the Hoey children in the 1901 were born Scotland. Wonder if it is worth checking this Scottish birth, even though in 1901/11, Stephen is recorded as born in County Antrim ( as still no sign of his birth):
