Loretta Clares Garbutt 1844 and Alfred Napolean Garbutt 1842 France

Please can anyone help find the births for these two children.  Their father went to France (we do not know why) and his wife had these two children while they were there.  Fathers name was William George Garbutt (1799) and his wife was Jane.  They had several other children but in the UK.  Several of us are looking at the family as we are direct descendents and are baffled as to where and why they went to France.  they must have gone after July quarter of 1940 as they had a child then in South Shields.

I can see them in censuses (wife appears to be Jane not Sarah - did William remarry?), including after Loretta married John Selby, but unfortunately no clues as to where in France they were born - there is no national index to births for France.

What was William's occupation in his later years? Railways and ironworks are some of the industries that would have seen British labourers in France in the 1840s.

Yes he remarried and wife was Jane.  Sorry I put wrong wife on there.  I have changed it.

He was a brickmaker in 1841 census.

I cannot find any shipping records for that time.  Thought they would give me a clue to where they went.

No help...but one does wonder about  a brick lab. going to France - 1842.

Bricklayer = possibly related to railway projects, for example tunnel building.

 - and sure enough, although not one of the children you list, in Pissy-Pôville, 26 February 1845, was registered an English child, Marie Jeanne Garbutt, her father William, working as some sort of bricklayer associated with the railways (aged 40), and his wife Jeanne Trea?, aged 35, who married in Jarrow, Durham, England, 10 August 1834 (?)

His wife was Jane Train.  I do not know who you mean for the Maria aged 40.  They did not have a child Maria.  Thank you for these links, I will have a look at them.

Jorose : you're right , it is clearly stated in the birth certificate :  William Garbutt ouvrier mouleur briquetier du Chemin de fer = brickmaker for the railway.

Most certainly on the line Rouen -Le Havre or Paris -le Havre
