Ayto Family
« on: Tuesday 30 March 21 09:13 BST (UK) »
Anyone tracing the Ayto family, Invercargill area ?..... Joseph Ayto and wife Alice Crozier emigrated there from England, in 1910.....just trying to piece the NZ side of things together, from an Ayto in England......

Hello from NZ

Our National Archives via their ARCHWAY online service hold files regarding your family. Some of which can be viewed online by clicking on the prompts.

https://www.archway.archives.govt.nz/SimpleSearchResults.do

https://www.archway.archives.govt.nz/ViewFullItem.do?code=22091646&digital=yes

There were 10 hits in total, the link above hopefully will link you to his probate file.

Ask nicely, and with luck, our Moderator who assists with photos from Wellington held files, may photograph correspondence by his Brother in law R F CROZIER on Mr Ayto's behalf.

https://www.archway.archives.govt.nz/ViewFullItem.do?code=24711714

Plus PAPERSPAST hits. Rather a lot of misplaced hits [typo etc] in some 400 hits, but the first AYTO that I found was for a Jos AYTO in a jury report 1912, then presumably his son John AYTO in a School breakup report.

https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/ST19120605.2.6?items_per_page=100&query=Ayto&snippet=true&sort_by=byDA&title=AHCOG%2cBH%2cCL%2cCROMARG%2cDUNST%2cESD%2cLCM%2cLCP%2cLWM%2cME%2cMIC%2cMTBM%2cNOT%2cOAM%2cODT%2cOW%2cOSWCC%2cSOCR%2cST%2cTT%2cWSTAR

https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/ST19191224.2.59?items_per_page=100&page=3&query=Ayto&snippet=true&sort_by=byDA

John's accident.

https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/ESD19321227.2.77?items_per_page=100&page=4&query=Ayto&snippet=true&sort_by=byDA

There are also clips about Winnie AYTO. So some info for you to start with.
With PapersPast searches I suggest you start with the ADVANCED SEARCH function. Restricting your historic press research dates to 1910 up to the limit of the currently available press for the publishers in the Southern region of the South Island.

So click SELECT ALL to turn that option off and then click just OTAGO REGION, or plus CHRISTCHURCH Region and greatly narrows down hits to more local papers.

The 400 I found in a general search of AYTO included a lot of CLAYTON's hits.

Alan.

Many Thanks.....most interesting....anyone with the Ayto surname goes back to Anthony Ayto, I often visit his grave at Normanton, Lincolnshire....His father was John EATOUGH (1720-1779) he was born and died at North Collingham, Nottinghamshire.......

There are a dedicated team of volunteers who help on the NZ board, and they, I am sure, will do some digging for you.

I'm about to order up my limit of five files to view at the Auckland branch of the National Archives, and with luck I will finally get to Auckland Tomorrow to look them up. Most are for overseas requests. Any spare time left over, I will get back to my research projects, but only too happy to help, as others help me from archives I can not get to in person.

Happy hunting,

Alan.

Hello Del 80

I just looked for "trees" (NZ  AYTO family ) on ancestry.com ...  and of the 27 or so, the first "tree" appears to be yours  ?   ;D

So I wondered if you had been in touch yet with any of the others who have listings on that site ???

I just ask, because you initially seemed to be wanting to make contact with people researching AYTO who had knowledge of the family in the Invercargill area ???
Seems that the others with AYTO "trees" would be best placed to help you - at least initially.   :)

If of course there is other  specific information you need ... New Zealand records etc.,  etc. ... then most happy to try to assist you.

Reading the probate for Joseph Ayto, who died 1950, I am quite puzzled that one of the documents states that Alice Anna Ayto is his widow, and is signed in 1960 by A  A Ayto.....I have Alice as dying BEFORE Joseph in 1946 ?? as do other trees....unless I'm reading  it wrong .......

Lu, I can only see three trees on Ancestry,  maybe it's because I am using Ancestry.uk and not Ancestry.com ?.....I don't have worldwide membership, I have quite a few of the Ayto family in New Zealand amongst the nearly 3,000 people on my tree, but struggling to piece them all together.....I realise that I can't ask for info. on living people on here, so may try to make contact via Facebook or something......
