Records for John Joseph Holt

Hi, I hope this is ok to ask. 
I have a cousin named John Joseph Holt, born 1923 in Liverpool, England.  Family story goes that he jumped ship and was never seen again.  His parents John Robert Holt and Josephine (nee Westerman) tried many times over the years to find him, with no success. 
I have found death records (1980) that match age, parents names etc but no other details. Are there any records I could look at online, as I'm in England? The death record states it was in Victoria.

There are three different John Joseph Holts in Victoria in the 1977 electoral rolls. Two of these have Trove newspaper marriage notices that indicate Australian parentage. The remaining one is living in Altona with Miriam Hazel Holt, who died in 1998 as Miriam Hazel Newton, also known as Holt.

A massive thank you to all have answered! 
I have managed to get hold of his death certificate  and it does state he wasn't maried. 
It has answered some questions and in turn opened up so many more (as usual!).  Where the story came from that he 'jumped ship' is a mystery. I do know that his father tried until his death to find him, with no success.  I may have a little dig around Miriam Hazel Holt, to see if I can find anything on her.
