Place not being standardized on Family Search
« on: Wednesday 31 March 21 10:44 BST (UK) »
Good Morning.

The Family Search site has started acting slightly differently recently. Until a few weeks ago, if I wanted a place to be standardized I would start typing it in the edit field (or just add a space to whatever was there) and then the drop down would be populated with recognized places and I would select one of those and save/close the dialog.

Unfortunately this no longer seems to be working, when I do something similar to the above it seems to work, but then when I look at the people's records the place will be flagged as non-standardized and I have to edit it again to standardize it.

Has anyone worked out to get around this? It's very annoying if I fill in details for a huge family from a census record and then have to go back to every single person to re-standardize the places.

Eva family in Devon and Cornwall.
Bowdidge family in Devon and Dorset.

Usually, if you delete the 'm' at the end of United Kingdom you will be presented with the complete standardised location to select.
Horne - Oxfordshire, Lincolnshire
James - Grosmont (Monmouthshire)
Jones, Thomas, Davies - Carmarthenshire, Glamorgan
Price - Monmouthshire, Glamorgan
Prosser - Breconshire
Prossl - Bohemia, London
Rees - Carmarthenshire, Monmouthshire, Illinois
Walter - Somerset, Kansas, Queensland, Western Australia

Thanks for the reply Hinso. The problem is that when I select a standard place (I usually get the drop down list by adding a space to the end of the place name, but removing the "m" from "United Kingdom" would do the same) and select one of them, it is not being flagged as being standardized after the dialog closes.

It didn't use to behave this way, Family Search are constantly tinkering with the user interface on their site, and generally the changes are big improvements. For example the way that merging people works now is much better than it used to be.

Do you click on the grey bar that includes the standardised location? I just did that and it worked for me.
