Tasmanian Archives - Colonial Secretary Correspondence
« on: Wednesday 31 March 21 12:57 BST (UK) »
I have searched the Colonial Secretary Correspondence - Index to Correspondence Records, 1824-1836 and found references to 3 separate file numbers.

I guess these file numbers refer to the specific original correspondence.  If so, is it possible to get a copy of the documents, and how?  I am not in Tasmania.

Thanks

Have you tried here
https://libraries.tas.gov.au/Pages/Home.aspx

using 'Colonial Secretary' found 191 references

They are very helpful as they sent me loads on some distant relatives of my wife's from 1850's-- 1820's..

Also see these
https://archiveshub.jisc.ac.uk/search/archives/a12737be-ef42-310f-b0e0-7c675f4c81d8
and
https://data.gov.au/data/dataset/colonial-secretary-correspondence/resource/ce6895ee-5d60-47f2-94aa-121aeb342bdc
and lastly
https://data.gov.au/data/dataset/colonial-secretary-correspondence/resource/ce6895ee-5d60-47f2-94aa-121aeb342bdc

It might be helpful for others looking at to include dates and what references you have already..

Hope these help
All the best

If you can't find.. try sending them a email / message...

Hi - what are the details (names or subjects, dates and file numbers)? These will probably be on microfilm, so I should be able to get copies for you. Sometimes files are missing though.

Thank you Mark for the links.  The libraries.tas site led me to the "Guide to the public records of Tasmania. Section 1, Colonial Secretary's Office" which was then accessible via Trove.

The guide confirmed that for the period of interest, when you have the file number it's possible to (hopefully) locate the respective inward correspondence in the volumes of the numerically arranged "CSO 1 - General Correspondence Records 1824-1836".  It seems there was also CSO 2 - Register of General Correspondence 1824-36 where a summary was made of the correspondence received and possible action taken.  This register seems to have been maintained in file number order.

Matthew, thank you very much for your offer to search for the original correspondence.  I would be very grateful to receive copies of whatever you can find in both CSO 1 and CSO 2.  The file details are:
  4805 - Chaplain's Clerk at Launceston (appointed)
4988 Application for either slop or commutation as Clerk of St John's Church
8523 Land. (there's also a faint note beside this which says "340 W Smith complaining of ??" and another number 58, or perhaps it should be 34058

The guide says that notations may have been made on the reverse of the inward letter.  If so, a copy of that page as well would be appreciated.

Thank you again, I look forward to seeing what you find.

Have you tried "Correspondence, 1821-1841" on Family Search yet (i.e. https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/304877?availability=Family%20History%20Library)?

eg #4805 (Recommending Thomas Goodwin as Chaplain's Clerk) starts here:

Great find TreeSpirit, I had no idea these were online!

4988 starts here
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSK6-BQCM-7?i=564&cat=304877

The registers for these file numbers are missing, unfortunately

8523 here
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSVT-6QZ4-V?i=550&cat=304877

Note that each numbered file can be a collection of correspondence and therefore multiple pages, so keep viewing until the next consecutive file number appears.

This is fantastic, and so quick!

Thank you TreeSpirit for the great lead to the records and thank you Matthew for taking the time to find the relevant pages.

I am in debt to all.
