Griffiths Valuation term "Rep." another meaning?
« on: Thursday 01 April 21 16:11 BST (UK) »
I have studied several GV entries for my ancestors and the term "Representative of" is quite prevalent. From all the online sources I have read, this term refers to someone who has passed away. But could it also mean that the person named had emigrated or left the country?   ???  (that scenario fits better with my family GV records   :)

I have only ever seen it in respect of someone who was deceased. According to an article by James G Reilly CGRS entitled “Is there more in Griffiths than just names:”

"Reps of," an abbreviation for “Representatives of” is used to indicate that the individual named in the valuation was dead at the time it was taken and that his or her legal interest in the holding was being temporarily represented by a family member or perhaps by an executor named in a will”.

Thank you, Elwyn.  I am going to rethink and re-evaluate my assumptions to fit in with a deceased person instead of assuming that they emigrated. Cheers.

Assuming the property is in Northern Ireland (as I know that’s where your interests usually are) have you searched the Valuation Revision books on the PRONI site to see who succeeded him? That might help if it’s the same family.  And have you checked the PRONI wills site to see if he left a will? (They start in 1858 so that should cover most Griffiths entries in NI).
