USA Social Security Death Index
« on: Friday 02 April 21 09:07 BST (UK) »
Hi

I had an ancestor John Smith Reid born 1890 Midlothian Scotland and emigrated to the USA . He worked in Detroit and became a USA citizen. His wife Isabella Reid died Died 7 February 1982 Detroit Wayne Michigan. Last Address 48021 Eastpointe, Macomb, Michigan. Her death showed on the USA Social Security Death Index.  Why does his death not show on it.
Can a person die in the USA and their death not show on the USA Social Security Death index
Thanks John

I can see her death on the Michigan death index as Isabel B Reid 7 February 1982 but not on the social security index.

There is another Isabel Reid who died 1990 who is on the social security death index.

Here she is on the SSDI - Isabel Reid - Birth Date 6 Mar 1900 - February 1982
Issue Year 1956 Michigan
Last Residence 48021, Eastpointe, Macomb, Michigan.

Anc tree shows this record ?

John Smith Reid - Death Date 14 Jul 1976 Helier Jersey (this is Helier Jersey Illinois)
Probate Date 23 Dec 1976  London

John Smith Reid has been a mystery to me for a long time. I do not think its him in Jersey. The probate relates to ST Helier Jersey UK.

John Smith Reid had a SSN 363096580 and as far as I am aware died in Detroit /Macomb area at some stage but thought he would show up on the SSDI.  John Smith Reid's DOB is 5 November 1890 Midlothian Scotland.

Can a USA death not show up on the SSDI

Thanks John

The SSDI was up and running by about 1962 (think we explained this in the last thread) - if he died before that date then he wouldn't appear.
There is no death that I could see for John Reid - 5 November 1890 Macomb Michigan or elsewhere.

Thanks Sandra
I think I will put this one to bed now, there are times you cover so much ground with different family lines it does get a little mind boggling

many thanks again

John

There's a gap in online Michigan death records and the online Michigan death index with no coverage from 1953-1970.  Wayne Co. (where Detroit is) has an index up to 1953, but I didn't see a likely match for him there. https://detroitpubliclibrary.org/research/burton-historical-collection/wayne-county-death-record-index

A 1957 Detroit city directory has Isabel Reid, widow of John, clerk Weyers Miller Bakery, home 60 W. Margaret av.  So seems likely that he died between 1953-1957.

Hi shellyesq

Thank you very very much for that it moves it on for me and narrows the death down to a short period. Much more than I had before.

many thanks again its really appreciated

Regards

John
