Sydney Hoskin
« on: Friday 02 April 21 12:25 BST (UK) »
Hi All,

The name Sydney with this spelling seems to have been handed down across multiple generations in my family. So far I’ve been able to trace it back to a (William) Sydney Hoskin 1837-1872 in St Austell, Cornwall but that’s the farthest back I’ve found it. Just wondering if anyone out there might have seen this name pop up prior.

Thanks!

That seems to be the 1st use of the christian name Sidney/Sydney I can see for the Hoskins at this stage.

I did notice a Tree has the wrong Parents for William.

He was bapt as you know 25 Feb 1846 with his siblings Elizabeth Jane (1840) and Mary Ann 1833
1841 he is under Sydney Hoskin

I see William Sidney was buried 21 Dec 1872 age 35
William snr 24 Jul 1878 age 70

I think William married Mary HALLS 09 Feb 1833 St Austell

Birth Reg GRO
HOSKIN, ELIZABETH  ANN mothers mn HULLS
GRO Reference: 1840  M Quarter in ST AUSTELL  Volume 09  Page 29

I tried to go back a little to see if the name (christian or surname) crops up in earlier records.

I would not be concerned about the spelling - if Sydney was working class he might not have been literate, so spelling might vary according to the habit of the person writing the name (parish clerk, census enumerator, registrar, etc.)

If there are no Sydney Hoskins prior to 1837 the name might have derived from the male ancestors of a Hoskin wife, a relative, a friend of the family, or a person in the news.
