2 birth records
« on: Friday 02 April 21 19:48 BST (UK) »
Hi

What would be the reason why someone would have two birth records - one in 1970 and one in 1971.

The name of the child is exactly the same in both.

In the first record (Jun 1970), the record is handwritten on at the bottom.

In the second record (Sep 1971), the record is printed as normal.

The first registration date is likely to be nearer to the date of birth as another birth has been registered in Dec 1971.

Does anyone know why this would have happened?

Many thanks

It is likely one birth record, indexed twice.

A possibility would the birth was not registered in time, so there was a late registration in 1971, and then a cross-reference added to the correct quarter for the birth.

In this case you would see the 1971 reference looks normal, and the 1970 reference has page number something like S'71 - meaning, see September quarter 1971.

Another possibility is the re-registration of an illegitimate child upon the parents marriage in '71 with a hand written addendum in the '70 index.
There would therefore be a third registration in the mother's maiden name in the '70 index.

Thank you for your reply - so helpful - that's exactly what happened, found the third registration.  Many thanks!

Hi MerriMum,
Glad to have helped.
I had the same problem, it took me a little while to twig it too, even though I started with the original maiden name entry and an exact birth date from the baptism register.
If you haven't already done it, it would be helpful to future researchers to add two Postems to the FreeBMD Indexes cross-referencing the original maiden name entry and the later married name re-registration.
Regards,
Malcolm.
