John Burke b c 1859
« on: Friday 02 April 21 19:57 BST (UK) »
Hello. John Burke was my g g grandfather bc1839. He came to England from Ireland I found him in the 1862 census. Living in Sheffield as a lodger age 22 with a family named Murphy I. have found about the family before he left Ireland. & the family history thereafter
It may be impossible to find out but would like to know if he would be on a passenger list from Ireland to England  He was from Tipperary area I expect sailed from Dublin to Liverpool . I cannot find find him on a census for 1851 in Sheffield so assume he was still in Ireland then. Would be grateful for any help with information
Many thanks. Tineke

Pretty sure there weren't passenger lists from Ireland to England.

Below from an Irish genealogy website

There's one crucial feature of Irish immigration to Britain that you should be aware of: there are no passenger lists of people who crossed the Irish Sea by ship.

Unlike those Irish emigrants who set sail for Canada, the USA, Australia and New Zealand, passengers leaving Ireland on ships to England, Scotland and Wales were not counted or recorded on embarkation nor were they counted or recorded on disembarkation.

They were, to all intents and purposes, internal migrants.

Tineke,
You need to amend your heading - you have 1859 and then 1839 in your message.

Do you know who John's mother was?  There is an 1851 record of a Jane (widow), John and Mary living in Sheffield.  John's age is given as 10.  All three born in Ireland.

Living as lodgers here Barrell Yard, 34, Water Lane, Sheffield, Yorkshire

Is this the 1861 census that you found for John?

Lodging at Park View, Ecclesfield, Wortley, Yorkshire with widow Eliza Murphy and her daughter and son.

Registration district   Wortley

You seemed to think he was in Sheffield in 1861 but there does not appear to be anyone of that name living there.

I have John Burke on the 1861 census  age 22 b Ireland.  Status lodger   Head of house Eliza Murphy. age. 68.   Daughter Margaret age 28. Son John age 26.   John Burke  lodger age 22   Civil Parish Ecclesfield.  Ecclesiastical Parish Wadsley.  Reg District Wortley.
As his age is given as 22  he must have been born c 1839. As given on census.   I cannot find him before 1861 so think he may have crossed to England. about 1859 or thereabouts
His parents who were in Ireland were William Burke & Margaret Meara
John married Anne Bramhall who lived on the next street .They had 4 living children & had lodgers of their own.
I have all the family history but was curious about how he ended up in Sheffield , how he got there .
He was a labourer in a sand quarry which I expect supplied the steel works

I think you will have to accept that it is unlikely that you will find any record of John crossing from Ireland to England.

It is a little annoying that census records don't always specify where in Ireland someone was born.  No doubt if they did it would make it easier to verify that you have found the correct person.
