Georgia Van Meter 1879- 1958
« on: Saturday 03 April 21 01:41 BST (UK) »
I could use some help in tracing one of her husbands(she had four) and also her parents.
Georgia married Charles Bolton Clifton 23 Jan 1898 in Seattle. Charles was born 1871 in Lancashire, England. I have him in 1871/81 census but can not find him in any US census nor a death for him.
In 1900 Georgie is living in San Francisco with her mother Lydia(1854 Iowa) and daughter Thelma. The census indicates that her father was born in Illinois. Georgia V Pugh died 1 Jun 1958 Venice, California. The death cert states that her mother was Lydia Campbell and her father was George Van Meter.
I can find no trace of her mother before or after 1900 and no trace of a George Van Meter. Familysearch show a few George Van Meter born 1845-55 but no marriages anywhere.

George W Vanmeter
Lydia Compton
married 12 April 1874, Tippecanoe, Indiana

---------
everything from here down is just a sketch of who he might be. A lot of this might be on familysearch, now that you know where to look.

He might be the man who was boarding with Martha Fletcher in Sugar Creek, Vigo, Indiana in 1900.

He married her 22 October 1906. his parents: Richard Van Meter, Lizzie Fulkerson

still with Martha in Sugar Creek in 1910. his age 65, hers 56, he was a brick mason.

1920 in Terre Haute, listed as married but on his own with one boarder in the house. George was a grocer.

1860 Jasper, Jasper County, Illinois with mother Elizabeth, 4 siblings

died 20 June 1933, Terre Haute, IN. born 17 Feb 1852, widower, parents Richard Van Meter, Elizabeth

I just deciphered that for myself. He was a steward on the steamer Dirigo. see:

With an occupation like steward on a ship, Charles B Clifton could be anywhere after 1899. I'm not finding anything on him except for what I posted. Maybe someone else will do better at it.

Thanks for the info.
Charles could have ended up in the goldfields but with his health and alcohol problems he would not have lasted very long.
I wonder if Lydia is living with someone she did not or could not marry and is using his surname?

Much appreciated

In the Terre Haute Saturday Spectator from 19 Sep. 1912, under Marriage Licenses (Oct. 19-25):

George Vanmeter, 60, grocer, Taylorville, divorced three times in 1900, 1908 and 1911, to Martha Vanmeter
