Thanks KHP.
The death of Alfred James Rawstron who died in Chch in 1944 is registered under the surname "RAUSTRON"

Spades - I have found on Forces War Records the following:
A J Risden  1902 - 5th NZ Contingent

Unfortunately I don't have full membership so unable to check this out.  But looks like he could have been awarded the KSA and QSA South African medals?

Back to variant name spellings!

Didn't get that far to see, was just thinking how a transcriber could mistake the 'W' for an "U".

Cheers

The same source has a 1880 passenger record for a A.J. RAWSTON who travelled from Melbourne to Port Chalmers per the Rotorua. Described as a miner aged 24, single, from England, travelled Steerage.

I did see this separate record who I suspect is your man. Note the spelling variant:

NZ War Memorials & Rolls of Honour.
Name: RISDEN A J
War:    1899-1902
Date:   1899
Place:   Napier and District South African War, Napier, Hawkes Bay

Spades

Record for this man at Archway has his mother as Emma, shakespeare Road, Napier
Record seems to be signed by him, as Risden.

Thanks Mckha489 - just discovered this also.
So we can rule this person out.
Back to the drawing board!

Who is the one in Taranaki? Is he the same as the one who shot his wife in 1913, and is that the one who died in Christchurch 1944?

This afternoon I checked the NZ death microfiche at the local library for the period 1926 - 1980 and found nothing.
I did however find him in the Stones September 1920 Directory;
Rawstron, Albt Salesman - 274 Main Road, P N

Thanks to all for your postings and advice.
At this stage it looks like he doesn't want to be found and likely to have changed his name.
I have also looked under the surname "Mitchell" as this was his Mother's maiden name.
This one has "stumped" me for the time being so will close off this posting.
Thanks again.
