How and where to obtain a Coroners report
« on: Saturday 03 April 21 09:12 BST (UK) »
Hi

My Grand Mother Lily Maud Hutchinson was killed during the Blitz and there is some discrepancy as to where this happened.

My Father has told me she was working as a cleaner in a pub when a V1 dropped on the corner of Guildford St and Union St Southwark on 19 June 1944 killing both her and her Daughter Patricia Doreen Hutchinson. His recollection is that they were in the cellar and were found under a table, a water main had ruptured and they both drowned.

I have a conflicting report from a Newspaper stating the were both killed in Union St although the two local pubs the King Henry VIII and The Jolley Gardeners were both listed as death sites.

I assume the only way to determine the truth is with a coroners report can anybody tell me how I go about this, or if it is difficult can you suggest a Researcher who could assist.
Many Thanks
Tom

Does Lily's death certificate show there was an Inquest?  If so it will give details of the Coroner and the area he covered.  You can then use that information to contact the most likely archives to ask if they still hold the file.

I managed to find the Coroner's file for the inquest into my gt.uncle's death in London (1902) at the London Metropolitan Archives.

Coroners' inquests were very rarely held for air-raid victims in WW2. Please see the LMA research guide ...

I have  death certs for a couple of relatives who were killed in Liverpool during a bombing raid. Sadly the only cause of death given was 'due to war operations'.
